Yūsuke Kafuku is a theater actor married to Oto, a film screenwriter who likes to craft stories during sex. They previously lost a four-year-old daughter to pneumonia and Yūsuke also witnesses Oto having an affair with a young man. One day Yūsuke comes home to find Oto collapsed on the floor, dead from a brain haemorrhage. Yūsuke sees Oto’s lover at her funeral. Two years later, Kafuku accepts a two-month residency with a theater program in Hiroshima, where he will direct a multi-lingual adaptation of Chekhov’s play Uncle Vanya. The theater company requires that he be accompanied by a driver, the 23-year-old Misaki Watari, due to a previous artist being involved in a car crash. He objects at first, possessive of his bright-red car, but relents after a test drive reveals Watari is a skilled driver. Kafuku auditions many actors for the play in a variety of languages (for example the woman who acts Sonya is mute, so can use only sign language) and casts Oto’s lover – an actor named Kōji Takatsuki – in the lead role despite his young age.

The early rehearsals are awkward because of the language difficulties, and when asked for specific direction on the scenes Kafuku only tells his actors to stick to the text. Takatsuki asks Kafuku to meet with him after-hours to talk, but Kafuku is hesitant to speak in-depth with him. Takatsuki’s erratic behavior concerns Kafuku, as he witnesses the young man assaulting someone for taking pictures of him. During a late-night drive with Takatsuki, Kafuku reveals that he knew of his wife’s affairs but did not say anything because he was afraid of losing her. Takatsuki expresses admiration for her writing, and shares a story she told him that Kafuku had never heard the ending to before. Some time later, the police arrive at a rehearsal and arrest Takatsuki for killing another man who was taking pictures of him. The theater programmers press Kafuku to step into the role of Vanya.
